Dragkroka drives its hook into the folk music of all the Nordic countries - with the heavy bass groove of the cittern, a fiddle that continuously tests the limits of harmonic possibilities, and an anchored, energetic and stomping melody delivered by the bulldozer of the folk music world, the Swedish nyckelharpa - Dragkroka plays traditional Nordic dance music, with arrangements that draw on their extensive study of the master
musicians of the past and the modern masters of today. They use this knowledge to create new compositions and drive their living tradition into the future.
The band consists of:
Alfred Bergkvist - Cittern
Rasmus Hemström - Nyckelharpa
Henry Burtonwood - Fiddle
The trio began in 2022 when Henry left New Zealand to follow his passions for Nordic folk music. They met at Skurups Folkhögskola where they studied Swedish folk music, and bonded over their shared love of the powerful dance groove of the Swedish tradition. Alfred and Rasmus continued their studies of folk music at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, and Henry joined them there for a semester while he studied the Nordic Master in Folk Music. During this degree he spent 2 years traveling around the Nordics, studying at the various folk music academies in Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Norway, diving deep into the folk music traditions of each country. Now graduated as a Nordic Master, Henry is bringing Dragkroka to New Zealand to share the incredible music he has experienced in his travels.
